And None for Gretchen Weiners
The current impact of Saturn in Aries, the Fall of Caesar, and maybe, just maybe, it's time for Gretchen Weiners to free her "fetch".
And so the purging continues—Here falls the swords that we held for those who cannot come with us. The path becomes heavier and the baggage claim more restricted.
For those who don’t know or need a refresher, Gretchen Weiner’s was a character in the movie Mean Girls. She was a trend follower, she was a puppet for the meanest girl of all, Regina George. And she so desperately wanted to make the word “fetch” cool but Regina George would eventually teach her, that in her group, she makes the rules—“Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen!”
Gretchen was an example of someone who so deeply desired to have a sense of self but could not quite find it. She was the characterization of a suppressed inadequacy wound and she was a ticking time bomb in a world that seemingly didn’t want her mind or creativity, just her body, her number, her weight, her presence—“We should totally just STAB CEASAR!”
I have been sitting on this message for weeks, waiting for the right moment, waiting for the right metaphor. But the words, “And none for Gretchen Weiners” continued to play over in my head, time after time. It just wouldn’t let me rest. (And again, for those who didn’t see the movie, this was a line from one of the students passing out paid Christmas candies at school as gifts from friends, boyfriends, or crushes).
Just like this reading, below, shows us, sometimes the message isn’t clear until the lesson has been learned. This was a message about what it looks like or rather, what it feels like, when you’re in the wrong room but you’re too afraid to leave. And this is what Saturn and Chiron are teaching us all right now in Aries. We’ll return to that lesson at the end, but first, let’s break down the cards for this week.
This week’s message is about the wounds of our Fathers that bled onto us, into us, and then onto us again. Here’s to the moves we could have made, had we been able to see more clearly, breathe more clearly, feel more freely, and know more confidently that we were capable.
Let’s start in the center—The Emperor x 10 of Swords:
These two cards together represent the Father, The Patriarchy, and Authority in its Death throes. I can hear the man in the 10 of swords saying “I think I’ve seen enough” as if he’s finally begun to catch wind of the swords in his back. Finally sensing the return of his own actions. Whether oppressor or oppressed, we can feel a mirror in this 10 of swords. It is the payback for our own movements, or lack there of, and the fight to exact karma at his doorstep for the days of unchecked arrogance, maybe ignorance, or maybe just the abrasion of peace. And for the Emperor, all three.
It seems the Emperor has finally lost control of the reigns of society, the death grip on the throats of the matriarchy being ripped off, and he’d rather crawl back into the chest of knowledge he misused and abused. Maybe even lay down and die there because it just isn’t bearable to keep going. It’s the only thing he’s ever known. At least he’ll die there swaddled in the knotted panache of his own cape.
Meanwhile, the Wheel of Fortune hovers. There is a sense of inaccessible manifestation that awaits us all but the walls are too thick and the lines are so blurred. These manifestations are waiting for the barriers to breakdown, for the bough to break, the bottom to drop out. But this Fortune feels like a ticking time bomb. It comes with more chaos and illusion. The energy of panic sits in the air, all-consuming and seeking a home, but the owner of that panic is still at large, a cowardice fool refusing to claim his own baggage.
In this deck, the clock is on fire but it stands in front of the water. The time is up and the answers are here, but they wait within the depths of our own consciousness, within the parameters of our own hearts, our own creative reach. Yet time just keeps ticking, the clock gets louder, suspension looming.
Behind it sits a 5 of wands. In this card 5 candlesticks are shown being blown at by a bellow. A bellow is used to keep a fire going but it is meant to be used on a fireplace. In this image, the bellow blows a cloud of smoke in the direction of a candelabra with only 2 of 5 candles still lit. This card signifies that it is time to make a decision. A choice awaits us. But it also presents the question: Have we been blowing out the flames or feeding them with misaligned choices?
A 7 of swords and 10 of wands lies behind this 5 of wands.
Do these burdens on our shoulders really belong to us? Or are our ancestors and those who came before us crying out to be honored in their struggles and their challenges? Asking us to experience their unheard cries and unspoken truths? Are we making this anticipation of doom our home? Living in constant devastation, shame and anger?
Are we repeating the problems of our ancestors without hearing the wisdom that lies beneath their grief? Are they simply asking us to understand their challenges more deeply and to allow them to show us the actions they didn’t take, or couldn’t take? And then by doing so, once and for all, releasing those burdens, breaking those chains and offering us freedom.
That clock represents the ever-unfolding change at play, but the constant and dire need that still remains. Anticipation is eating us alive, but nothing is actually moving and the final jurisdiction weighs heavy over the head of the Emperor, as he sits confidently cloaked and protected per se. But an anvil suspended ominously above his head by nothing but a rope, speaks volumes to the risk he presents and the inevitable execution that awaits him. After all, it is quantum physics, it is Saturn, and it is, an eye for an eye, in the end.
On the other side of this, in the near future, we have a 10 of cups, a Piscean card, an outpouring of love and emotional fulfillment but mystery, so much mystery and idealism that muddies the purity of joy. Beneath this card lies a novelty card, a tired boy staring at the moon, lost in his woes. Have we lost sight of joy and fulfillment due to chronic dissatisfaction? Or is it simply pride and a need to dive deeper into our experiences? Perhaps it is a reminder to have gratitude for those experiences and appreciation for all that they teach us.
The Knight of Cups signifies a person, a message, or an experience that comes to us with a gift of emotional awareness. His umbrella says I have a solution to your dilemma, the one that keeps you trapped, seeing no end in sight, seeing nothing but rain.
This messenger will get you moving, but it will require some uncomfortable emotions to begin stirring. It may even require you to give in ways that you’ve been withholding. He ushers in a Death card clarified by the 9 of swords—there may be mental unrest over this final transformation.
This signifies a pattern breaking or a massive chapter closing that then sends us on our way into a new journey of emotional and mental equilibrium and creative flow-state. We do not need to sit in this but rather learn how to use it, to create with it, to metamorphosize its existence. We are learning adaptation and how to move with the change. To mold it into something that works for us, that fulfills us, that puts a smile on that little boys face. But will we be willing to change shapes? Will we be willing to return to our authentic truth in the face of danger?
Other interpretations and supplemental themes present for your own use: Father wounds, challenges with authority, distrust and betrayal, passion for Justice, patriarchal reconstruction, corruption and misuse of power, the de-centering of men and masculine structures, the taming of pride, the re-discovery of the inner child, the liberation of imagination
Now let’s return to the part that Saturn and Chiron in Aries play within all of this. This is one of those, “we should have seen this coming” or “how did we let it get this bad” or “why did no one else see this coming” moments. But it is also a reminder of our own autonomy that is available to us in this moment and the responsibility that lies within that.
These two are working together to teach us that sometimes we don’t know our own strength until we are forced to use it in the face of our perceived limitations. We may not acknowledge the destruction of our own fears until we are forced to make friends with them, in the face of the crisis they have created. Until we are left with no way out, but through. And we may not recognize how much power we’ve willfully handed away to our oppressor, until we have no choice but to see that the oppressor has become our own minds.
While Saturn is a reminder that the Father will devour his own son in order to teach him a necessary lesson, it is crossed by the wounded healer, Chiron, who reveals to us the power that lies within the wounds that those lessons create. It is a reminder that there is light in all darkness. It is a call to return to the joy within the crisis. The silver lining.
And in Aries, these two planets teach us the battle of the mirror and the mask. The balance that is necessary to master this paradox without becoming consumed in its power, its fury, and its flames. It shows us that every challenge we find ourselves battling outside of us, lives somewhere within us as well. That the betrayals we experience are a mirror of the ways in which we have betrayed ourselves. That the chaos we feel the need to tame around us, is a representation of the chaos we refuse to sit with, within ourselves. And a reminder of the boundaries necessary to protect that joy within, the child in our hearts, but also the inevitable restrictions that they yield and the acceptance they require.
So maybe it is time that we should “TOTALLY JUST STAB CEASAR”, but maybe it’s also time for Gretchen Weiners to find the right room to free her “fetch”.
